Back in a 2014 Equipper (our monthly email – subscribe here), we asked Rob to share why he came to The Shepherd’s Bible College. For Rob, it came down to a need to be better equipped for the ministry he was already involved in.
Have you ever arrived at a point in your life where you have run out of excuses and have no option but to do what you have been putting off? Well, that was me back in December 2012. For approximately 5 years, I had felt the need to increase my knowledge and understanding of the Word of God.
Being the leader of a home group and an Elder at my church, a simple ‘to me the Bible means … such and such’ was simply unacceptable when it came to shepherding God’s people. I needed more than a casual knowledge of the Scriptures.
All the excuses that I had come up with not to study full time, God completely sorted them out. These excuses ranged from my wife’s employer allowing her to work away from her base, to our children being accepted into the school we believed was the best for them (we were placed in line on the waiting list) and even having a house become available for us the exact day we had someone moving into our property. All this happened six weeks out from needing to move, so we still had time to pack. Who was I to say ‘not this year God!’
I chose to spend my time at The Shepherds Bible College due to the commitment that all the lecturers have to uphold the authority of the scriptures as being sufficient for every area of our lives (2 Tim 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:3). Being able to interact with godly men has been priceless. The College is part of Riverbend Bible Church so as you are learning at the college you have an opportunity for Christian ministry. It was a year that I found so beneficial to my Christian walk and it opened my eyes even further to the wonder of God’s Word and the importance that we handle it as we are commanded to ‘…as a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the Word of truth’ (2 Tim 2:15).
While Rob went through the Diploma in Biblical Studies, studying full time, the recently refreshed Certificate in Christian Studies is also a great option for personal development without having to relocate and leave your job.
